BP: Building

Skyscraper

When it comes to the skyscraper I believe that these type of buildings inform us that the 20th century was a tough time in the lives of many Americans but even though they were not living glorious lives they still created these tall buildings which I believe signify the perseverance and success of the American people. As discussed in the lecture, the top of the Chrysler building was constructed out of materials similar to cars to show the world that we are proud of the cars we build and drive. Another example would be the Empire State building. When many Americans were unemployed during the Great Depression this building provided employment opportunities to many Americans to help them get back on their feet.

The Airport

When it comes to the design of the airport many of these airports had a freedom approach to them. For example, the design of the Dulles Airport is intended to present those who visit it with the idea of flight. The roof is very similar to a ramp that planes could use to obtain lift and takeoff. This doesn’t actually occur but the idea of flight is presented via the design of the airport. Another example of an airport design that we learned about in the video lecture was the TWA terminal in which the building looks to be an abstract design of a bird preparing to flap its wings and take off. Once again this presents the traveler with the idea of freedom through flight.

The House

The last building we learned about in the lecture was the House. To best explain this idea of freedom that I have mentioned in the previous two buildings I will be talking about the design of American houses. The interior of the house was very open with the resident being able to see in another room while not physically being in that room. For example, if you were in the living room you could see another person making dinner in the kitchen. These houses were designed to be open so that the resident would enjoy living in them and could connect with fellow residents if they desired.

Another aspect that houses displayed was success. Some houses are enormous in size to illustrate to passersby that the resident of that house is wealthy and successful. Our houses both interior and exterior illustrate to the world our interests. We may have the flag of our favorite sports team on a pillar or a pond in the front yard. Our houses allow us to maintain a freedom of design and show the world our interests through the medium of the design of a house.
