Steps to create postcard
1. I first chose a quote from the Votolato reading. I had read over sections of the reading several times until I found the quote I wanted to use for my postcard. The quote that I ended up choosing was "The considerable influence...resulted from their simultaneous appeal to the human intellect, senses and emotions."
2. Once I found the quote I wanted to use for my postcard I began to brainstorm what kind of photo would go along with the ideas of the quote. I decided to use an image I took of the Comair 5191 sculpture of the birds that is located in the Arboretum.
3. I chose the quote and the picture because I felt the two had a relationship. I took the design of the sculpture as the considerable influence and human intellect portions of the quote that the city had to remember those who lost their lives as a result of the tragic crash. The senses and emotions portion of the quote is what the family and friends feel when they see the sculpture and it presents them with the knowledge that the city of Lexington will not forget their loved ones.
4. Once I knew what photo and quote I wanted to use, I began to design the postcard.
5. I used Microsoft Word to create my postcard, I chose to have the picture surrounded by a blue frame. The quote was placed above the birds and my signature to identify that I took the photo was placed near the lower left hand corner of the image. The back of the postcard was just the standard design which consisted of 3 lines for postal info, my name for identification of who created the postcard and finally I kept the blue color scheme by filling the stamp area with the same blue as the frame on the front of the postcard.
Challenges
1. Overall designing the postcard was somewhat difficult. I went back and forth on what color I wanted to use, the type of font I wanted to use as well as the position of the font. I spent two days trying to figure out how I wanted to approach the design of the postcard before I arrived at the final product that I turned in during class.
2. I never used the print preview button so much on any project than I did on this one. I wanted to make sure the postcard would print out the exact way I wanted it to.
Opportunities Learned
1. From this project I got the chance to dust off my old skills of using the Word software to create beautifully designed objects which was something I had not done since my senior year of high school. It was nice to see my skills that I learned in high school payoff in college.
2. Even though I became stressed out because I had such trouble with the format of postcard not displaying the way I wanted to in print preview the final product was extremely satisfying because I got to see my postcard printed out just the way I had imagined it. It looked really good and it also felt good to know that I designed that postcard from the ground up. It was cool to see what was at one time a white space turn into a beautiful postcard.
