“…to convey a sense of natural unity both through the
interpenetration of spaces and the finishing materials in all the rooms.” (178)
I would classify my home as the
bungalow type of home. The reason I would call my home a bungalow type of home is
due to the fact that the house is smaller than the average suburban house. When
it comes to the outside of the house, the exterior is corrugated siding instead
of brick exterior like modern homes have. When you approach my house you enter
by means of a front porch. The front door is also a rustic design; the door is
extremely plain without any design like the doors on modern homes come equipped
with.
Once you enter the house you will
notice the house is very open. You can view the living room from the kitchen and
vice versa.
The house also has a very rustic
look to the inside as well. The cabinets are old style plain white cabinets;
they feature no artistic design what so ever.
The
bathrooms also are a very old design. Unlike the new modern bathrooms that
feature granite countertops with unique lighting fixtures, artistically designed
shower rods etc., my bathroom is simple with a plain white sink fixture and
simple straight shower rod.
Now to
answer the question of what makes the American house form such a salient
example of design culture materialized? I believe that the American house is
such an important example of materialized design culture because the American
house is designed by those who live in them. When new houses are in the creation
process the owners are involved in every step of the way, from the design of
the rooms to the size of the garage.
Every house
is unique, it expresses the values and lifestyles of the owner. You can walk by
or into any American house in the modern world and immediately determine the
interests of the inhabitants.
So, the
American house form is such a salient example of design culture materialized is
because it displays the interests of those who live in the house and allows the
world to see what type of people live in the house. Every house is unique and
it allows the inhabitants to fully customize the interior as well as the
exterior to let passersby know that this is my house and these are my
interests.
